Justice Kailash Gambhir
Shri Kailash Gambhir was born on 7th September, 1953 into a middle-class family originally from Rawalpindi, and grew up in Delhi's walled city.
Following graduation from Kirori Mal College, Delhi University he decided to choose Law for his career. On completing LLB from the Law Centre II, University of Delhi, he joined the Bar in August, 1979. With a commitment towards the legal profession and a vision to uphold the dignity of the legal fraternity, the Bench and the litigants, Shri Gambhir took active part in the Bar activities. In total devotion and with a sense of selflessness, he got elected as Additional Secretary, Honorary Secretary for various terms and eventually became the youngest President of the Bar Association.
Under his leadership, the Bar Association was given a new thrust, with academic and intellectual pursuits being promoted in the form of symposia and seminars. The Centenary celebrations during his tenure became a landmark in the history of the Delhi Bar Association. The unprecedented success of the celebrations, made him popularly known as the “Centenary Secretary”.
Although being a Bar activist he remained fully devoted to the profession and in recognition he was nominated as Sr. Govt. Counsel, Union of India (1995-1998), State Counsel for State of Goa & UP, Standing Counsel for Ministry of Railways and various banks and Public Sector Undertakings.
In the year 2000, he was appointed Addl. Standing Counsel for Govt. of NCT of Delhi in the Delhi High Court. In June, 2004, he was nominated Standing Counsel for the Govt. of India, Delhi High Court and handled important cases.
Apart from the legal arena, Shri Gambhir has shown keen interest in social and academic activities, which got him elected as Member to the highest Governing Council of University of Delhi, the University Court for successive three terms (1995-2010). He was also elected to the Executive Council of University of Delhi, the highest policy-making body, for the period October, 1998 – October, 2001.
Shri Gambhir also held the coveted post of Director in the Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Corporation – the apex State Corporation of UP, for about seven years.
Appointed as Additional Judge of the High Court of Delhi with effect from 29th May, 2006 and confirmed w.e.f 29.08.07. Retired on 06.09.2015.
